About EmpowerMat
EmpowerMat is a registered Canadian nonprofit organization (CRA #123456789RR0001) founded in 2020 and headquartered in Kamloops, British Columbia. We serve youth across British Columbia and Alberta, removing financial barriers so that every young person can access quality martial arts training regardless of their economic situation.
Founder
Rob Lee is the founder and driving force behind EmpowerMat. He is the head instructor of Boa BJJ & MMA in Kamloops, BC, and holds a brown belt in Carlson Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Having witnessed firsthand how financial barriers prevent deserving youth from accessing martial arts, Rob established EmpowerMat to create a sustainable, community-driven solution.
Our Mission
To break down financial barriers and empower individuals through martial arts — building confidence, discipline, and community across British Columbia and Alberta. EmpowerMat raises funds through tournaments, sponsorships, merchandise sales, and donations, then directs those funds to scholarships, equipment grants, and community programs.
Core Values
- Accessibility: Removing economic barriers so every youth can train regardless of financial circumstances.
- Community: Partnering with martial arts clubs for mutual growth and shared success.
- Empowerment: Promoting discipline, confidence, and leadership through martial arts training.
- Integrity: Transparency and accountability in all fundraising and scholarship decisions.
- Inclusivity: Welcoming all martial arts disciplines — BJJ, Judo, Karate, Wrestling, Muay Thai, and more.
How We Operate
Event-Based Fundraising
EmpowerMat hosts inclusive martial arts tournaments where a portion of all registration proceeds is allocated back to participating gyms. Gyms with more registered participants receive a higher percentage of event proceeds, incentivizing community growth.
Scholarship Program
Students or gym owners in BC and Alberta can apply for the EmpowerMat scholarship. Awards cover 100% of tuition fees. Eligibility is based on financial need and minimum attendance requirements documented by club owners.
Merchandise Sales
100% of profits from EmpowerMat apparel and merchandise sales support the scholarship program and administrative costs.
Transparency
EmpowerMat commits to yearly reporting on scholarships awarded, equipment provided, and community programs funded. Contact us at empowermat@outlook.ca for inquiries.
